DETAILS ABOUT JEST EXAM
âšī¸Full Form
Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST).
â
Eligibility
- For Ph.D. in Physics: M.Sc. in Physics. Some institutes also accept B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc./M.E./M.Tech. in relevant disciplines.
- For Ph.D. in Theoretical Computer Science: M.Sc./M.E./M.Tech. in Computer Science and related disciplines.
- For Integrated Ph.D.: B.Sc. in Physics or B.E./B.Tech. in relevant engineering disciplines.
- (Note: Specific eligibility criteria can vary slightly between participating institutes.)
đAge Limit
There is **no age restriction** for appearing for the JEST examination.
đŦDetailed Syllabus
The syllabus is based on the general curriculum of undergraduate and postgraduate level courses.
- Physics: Mathematical Methods, Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetism & Optics, Quantum Mechanics, Thermodynamics & Statistical Physics, and Electronics.
- Theoretical Computer Science: Analytical Reasoning and Deduction, Combinatorics, Data Structures and Algorithms, Discrete Mathematics, Graph Theory, and Principles of Programming.
âī¸Selection Process
- Step 1: JEST Written Examination. Candidates are shortlisted based on their rank in this single-paper, offline test.
- Step 2: Interviews at Participating Institutes. JEST is a screening test. Candidates must apply **separately** to each participating institute using their JEST score.
- Step 3: Final Selection. Each institute conducts its own interviews and/or further written tests to make the final selection. The JEST score is just one part of the overall evaluation.
đ°Stipend & Fellowship (During Ph.D.)
JEST is an entrance exam for a research program, not a job. Selected candidates are admitted as Junior Research Fellows (JRF) and receive a monthly stipend as per government norms.
- Junior Research Fellow (JRF) Stipend: Approximately âš37,000 per month for the first two years.
- Senior Research Fellow (SRF) Stipend: Approximately âš42,000 per month for the remaining tenure, plus other allowances like HRA.
đ¨âđŦStarting Post & Department
The starting designation upon selection is Junior Research Fellow (JRF) or Ph.D. Scholar in one of the premier research institutes of India, such as:
- Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR)
- Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI)
- Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs)
- S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences
- National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER)
đProfile of a Research Scholar
The role involves conducting original research under the guidance of a faculty supervisor, taking advanced coursework, publishing research papers in academic journals, and presenting work at national and international conferences. It is a career dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and scientific discovery.
đFacilities After Selection (in Research Institutes)
- Access to world-class, state-of-the-art research laboratories and equipment.
- Interaction with some of the best scientific minds and faculty in the country.
- Fully-funded opportunities to attend international conferences.
- Excellent libraries, computational facilities, and on-campus accommodation.
đ¯Scope
JEST is recognized as a National Eligibility Test (NET) by the Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB). It is the primary gateway for students aspiring to pursue a Ph.D. or Integrated Ph.D. in Physics and related fields at India's most prestigious research institutions. A Ph.D. from one of these institutes opens up careers in academia (as a professor), fundamental research (as a scientist in national or international labs), and R&D roles in high-tech industries.
đī¸Exam Dates & Frequency
- Frequency: The JEST exam is conducted once a year.
- Exam Month: Typically in February.
đHow to Apply
Candidates must apply online through the official JEST website. The process involves registration, filling the application form, uploading documents, and paying the application fee.
